the value of EXCEPTIONAL school Gardens for learning and health
Our Belief
To be a world-class sustainable gardening school program striving to provide exceptional savory gardens of nutritious plants in a cultured yet natural environment, for the purpose of education, conservation and consumption.
The Movement
The Nation, and much of the world today, is thinking about eating healthier once more. We are now beginning to walk past the processed food isle in search of organic or ‘real-food’ alternatives. One of these substitutes is to resurrect the forgotten age of the backyard garden.
Why not harness this naturalistic knowledge to ourselves and our children once more?
Enter the Savory Schoolyard Project by Jahkomo.
As the ‘fresh-food’ and ‘Local Food’ movements have been practiced in the Macaluso Family for generations, Jahkomo Landscape and Garden Design extends it’s knowledge of garden design to educational institutions – public to private, primary to adult.
Our belief is ‘center plate’. We believe ‘growing’ healthier kids through practical experience, education and better nutrition, while producing vegetables and herbs grown at school or at home for the discovery of nature of all involved.
Savory Reach
By supporting schools with professional garden materials, planning and construction, the Savory Schoolyard Project by Jahkomo Landscape and Garden Design is able to reach hundreds of children and their educators in creating a schoolyard that places an increased value on learning, working with nature, making good-meal choices and knowing exactly where food comes from.
“We want to empower children to become active participants in their food choices and know how to germinate a seed and see it through to harvest. Also, one of the other reasons why I’m so absorbed in a healthy food movement and the ‘how to’ of growing your own foods, is the fact that everybody eats but not they way their bodies require.
No matter who you are, you can only fully and truly endure on healthy foods and to flourish, we need to learn once more how to grow and provide on a local level.
I’ve have been a Designer for over twenty years and view gardening as another way of communicating with people. It’s the original Social Network. It really is!”
– Jack M. Macaluso
Edible school gardens give children the opportunity to learn where their food comes from and the true importance of good nutrition.
Gardening is a community of like-minded people sharing knowledge and experiences and collaborating with family, neighbors and loved ones.
By encouraging and supporting a ‘Savory Schoolyard‘ Garden, we create a sense of discovery for our children; the freedom to discover fresh foods, make healthier food choices, learn about the natural world around us and to become healthier.
Savory Measure
The Savory Schoolyard Project offers school gardens with custom garden designs in which educators can virtually combine every educational discipline into the garden, including science, math, reading, environmental studies, nutrition, and health.
Jahkomo Landscape and Garden Design creates custom school gardens through the use of a combination of traditional and composite materials. The end result is a visually stunning garden which fits nicely into your school property and enhances the students lives.
There’s not a single academic subject that can not be enriched through an edible education.
This interdisciplinary approach cultivates the gift and dexterity of all students while enriching the their observation capacities, thinking, planning, foresight and interaction.
It’s an Edible Educational Movement. This is at the heart of the Savory Schoolyard Project.
younger generations
Our younger generations can experience the rooted understanding of the natural structure of life and become better stewards of the world around them by managing, cultivating, and harvesting their school gardens with their very own hands.
The Heart of Eduction
The Savory Schoolyard Project nurtures community spirit, common purpose, and cultural appreciation by building bridges among other students, school staff, families, local business, and organizations.
It’s easy to see how edible gardens are not just an ‘add on’. It’s not something extra that you bring into your school, it’s actually at the heart of your school. An edible education is an education in life.
Let a school garden by the Savory Schoolyard Project enhance education and what this education can be.
We invite you to your school garden and fall in love.
